In 1988, Jan Norman took over the small business column at The Orange County Register. She quickly noticed many local small businesses who go above and beyond to keep their customers happy and in many cases, grow friendships with their customer base. She decided to give the community a way to recognize these business owners who keep the holiday spirit alive year round. Each year (going on 25 years!), she invites readers to nominate individuals for the title “Kindest Business Owner”.
The winner is published in the paper on Christmas Day and online. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Jan features the top vote-getters on her blog. This type of contest is a fantastic way to shine the spotlight on companies who really care about their customers and their business policies.
What a creative way to promote a new business! The Longboat Observer (Sarasota, FL) asks readers to dream up the name for the new business of Molly & David Jackson, current local business owners. Registrants of the contest are entered to win prizes; the grand prize winner gets a $500 gift certificate.
